Ideas For Decorating Your Teenage Child’s Room

Picture
The teen years are probably the hardest parenting season for any parent. Everyday is spent wondering what they are up to and all you can do is sigh in relief when you see them coming in through the door, whole and safe, at the end of the day. It is understandable for a parent to worry about their teenage child’s safety because these young adults can have very crazy ideas of fun, which are needless to say, more dangerous than they are normal. These crazy ideas have to reflect somehow in their rooms so when they tell you they want to redecorate their room, well, expect anything. You can help your child redecorate their room without appearing to be overbearing. Here is how:

Give them freedom to express themselves within boundaries

If s/he does not share the room with another sibling, then the situation is easy to handle. Allow them to do whatever it is they fancy, but set some boundaries. At that age, they may find nothing wrong with demolishing closets, walls or wanting an extension. So make it clear that changing the structure of the room is not part of the fun. They can paint in whatever color they want, use wall paper, wall hangings, hang paintings or change curtains. He may say he wants the four walls painted in black, yellow and purple. Be grateful that at least none of you will be forced to go into the room and pray he gets over it sooner.

It may not be as bad. You might be pleasantly surprised at how creative your son/daughter is when they are finally done with the decoration. They might even ask you for suggestions! Be happy to help.

Teenagers are usually into music, sports, theater, fashion and art among other interesting stuff. If your child is receptive to ideas and suggestions, guide him/her towards his/her passion and what they are good at. If they are music fanatics, encourage them to put up framed sheets of music, musical notes and frames on the walls. They can use wallpaper border made in musical notes and get a lamp whose base is designed like a treble clef. Let them use old vinyl records in a number of creative ways. They can find an area rug with a music-oriented design if they search far and wide.

If they are into sports, help them find posters of their favorite team or player. If they have autographs signed by these stars, they can display them in an interesting way on the bedside table; or if they have a glass display shelf, they can arrange them there. Baseballs can be attached to the ceiling fan string, arranged in a pattern on the wall or used to form the door knob. There are many area rugs featuring major league teams on sale over the internet.

Be lenient on the more sensible suggestions your teen child has on redecorating a seasonal decor ideas for their room, you can creating table setting with pictures, while remaining firm on the absurd ones. Don’t just turn down all their ideas; compromise on some if only to make them happy. Two years down the line, they will probably wonder how they ever thought their idea was cool.
