Whether or not you have chosen to discover the sex of your child before their birth or after, a neutral colored nursery is still a good idea. Mother Nature has been known to fool the latest medical advances and throw in a ringer; many single births can suddenly be revealed as fraternal twins, and a pink or blue theme will no longer be quite as good an idea as it first seemed.  There are many ways to create a nursery that will be perfect for your new arrival, no matter how many there are.

Using pale pastels of white, yellow and green can form the backdrop of a nursery furnished with bold colored accents to capture a child’s attention as they grow. Babies need visual stimulus and color is the way to achieve it. A flowing rainbow mural on the wall near the crib will provide hours of interest to a baby and a toddler. Shapes and cutouts painted in bold colors provide depth to a neutral colored nursery and do not clash with neutral table colors used as the backgrounds or base color schemes.

Nursery rhymes are wonderful for neutral colored nurseries. Using favorite children’s books filled with friendly characters from the pens of Beatrice Potter or A.A. Milne will fill a nursery with pastel colors that soothe and offer visual stimulation in a neutral colored nursery. Place a brightly colored natural Flokati rug beneath a rocking chair, and you will have a beautiful quiet place to rock your newborn for hours of parental fulfillment.

You can even place a baby shower table centerpiece or beautiful ocean theme on the walls, and carry it through to the furnishings and accents in the room. After the baby is born you can add touches of either feminine or male distinctions. Using pink sea shells added to the ocean floor, or fish with pretty parasols in an imaginative depiction of ocean life for a girl; and add a soft touch to a neutral colored nursery theme. For a boy, add a small submarine, or touches of Jules Verne’s “20,000 Leagues beneath the Sea”, what young boy does not love the many adventures of Verne!

Placing area rugs in a nursery provides the perfect place to lay a young child as they begin their first explorations outside the crib. Brightly colored Flokati rugs can be a way for a young child to first touch new textures and learn about the sense of touch. You can even find oval rugs designed to offer dimensional stimulus for babies to learn and explore their new world.

Neutral colored nurseries do not have to be bland and colorless; they just need to be accented with the right touches to provide comfort and warmth for any child. Safety of your child begins in the nursery, so remember to only purchase cribs, changing tables and other furniture that carries the JFMA certification. This will ensure the furniture used for your child is totally free of harmful paints and toxins.

Bring your new baby home to a neutral colored nursery that is the best representation of the world you want them to see, and feel. Touches of softness, accents of bold colors and textures will provide the perfect environment for your new bundle of joy.
