Holiday Decor

The last quarter of the year is a hectic one in decorating terms. Halloween is only the beginning. Then comes Thanksgiving. Before you know it, Christmas and Hanukah are here and then it’s a New Year once again. How then can you keep up with the rapid change in seasons and not burn a hole in your wallet?

Start With the Basics

You should start with plain and simple decorations because the ornaments for the different holidays are interesting enough. You don’t want to start with a fancy room and put on decorations on top of that as the result could be considered overkill. Many change out sheets, curtains, and pillowcases and you can certainly do that. Flokati rugs or any modern area rugs can be used as a base since they will not interfere with whatever theme you are going for – instead, they will enhance it and tie it together even more.

Know What You Need

Are you entertaining guests all season long? Or is it just for Thanksgiving or Christmas? Knowing what to expect allows you to plan ahead and budget for the holidays. Make a list of all the parties and dinners that you will be hosting and prepare early. Since you know beforehand, you can prepare a little at a time. It is quite stressful if you try to do all at the same time. If possible, do your shopping online. Not only will you save on some of the good deals to be had, you also avoid the holiday crowds and just wait for your order at home.

Come Up With a Plan and Stick to It

You need to know what to do months in advance. Identify what you will need before you head out. The key word here is need. Visualize where everything will go. Also, account for everybody. Rearrange furniture meant for every day; create a table setting that gives more conducive to socializing in your home. Consult websites and magazines for tips to get you through this challenging, yet extremely rewarding, time of year. Planning, organizing, and doing all the shopping out of season, well in advance, will save you precious time and money. Also, you get spared all the aggravation and frustration that is associated with the holiday rush.

Use Existing Focal Points

Make full use of a room’s natural focal points. Placing flower centerpieces decorations on just any random place will not attract that same kind of attention as what you would get from a few well-placed ones. Look at where your eyes naturally focus when entering a room – this is where the focal point lies. Placing Christmas trees, carved pumpkins, and the like near a fireplace means not really having to decorate much of the remainder of the room. All the attention will be diverted to that one area and nowhere else. Place tables with elaborate tablecloths near focal points for you to have somewhere to place additional ornaments if you still need to put in some more.

Accessorize

Pillows, candles, evergreen sprigs, flower arrangements, pine cones, and lots of holiday lights signify a home decked out for the holidays and set the mood. A home that seems ready to welcome the holiday is a welcome sight and will be the talk of the town.
